Ence’s biofactory in Pontevedra reduced its greenhouse gas emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels by 22% by 2021. This milestone is part of the company’s commitment to climate action, through which Ence wants to contribute to climate change mitigation in all its activities.
In this line of work of the company, the development of operational improvements and the replacement of fossil fuels by renewable fuels have contributed to the achievement of this result in the Pontevedra plant.
Specifically, the Pontevedra biofactory has developed reduction plans based on the continuous improvement of all stages of the process, which have led to a lower use of fuel thanks to operational improvements, as well as the complete elimination of the use of coke in the pulp production process.
In this way, Ence is getting closer every day to achieving its voluntary target of a 25 per cent reduction in specific Scope 1 and 2 emissions in the pulp segment by 2025 compared to the base year 2018.
In addition to reducing its emissions, Ence contributes to decarbonising the energy model by generating renewable energy with biomass, as part of its commitment to climate action. A contribution to which also adds the role of the company, offering solutions in the management of agroforestry waste for energy recovery, avoiding diffuse emissions and reducing the risk of fires, one of the main threats to carbon sinks in Spain.
By working along these lines, Ence contributes to SDG 7 (Ensure access to affordable, secure, sustainable and modern energy), increasing the proportion of renewable energy in the electricity mix and reducing emissions from energy production, as well as SDG 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts), strengthening resilience and the capacity to adapt to climate-related risks both in the company itself and in its supply chain, especially among forest owners.
