Magnon, the Ence Group’s renewable energy subsidiary, is accelerating the growth of its activities towards new renewable energies, taking advantage of its leading position in the biomass value chain in Spain.
The company has focused on offering comprehensive solutions for the generation of renewable energy with biomass for industrial customers in Spain. In this field of action, its objective is to obtain a production of 2,000 GWh of renewable thermal energy by 2030. This objective will generate an EBITDA of more than 40 million euros, according to the company’s forecasts.
Decarbonisation roadmap
To achieve this roadmap, Magnon has, as of 2023, a first service contract in operation with a leading company in the agri-food sector. This is in addition to the recently signed contract with Mahou San Miguel, a leading company in the brewing sector in Spain, for the installation of two biomass boilers of 10 MWt each at its factory in Alovera (Guadalajara).
This infrastructure, which totals an investment of 16 million euros, will enable the supply of 85 GWht of renewable thermal energy per year for 15 years to decarbonise the brewery’s operations. The facility is scheduled to be commissioned in the first half of 2026. This project is supported by a grant of four million euros from the PERTE decarbonisation programme.
With this initiative, Mahou San Miguel will be able to reduce by 95% the direct CO2 emissions of its plant, the largest brewery in Spain and one of the most technologically advanced in Europe. It will do so thanks to the work of Ence’s subsidiary, which is leading the construction, commissioning and operation of a facility that will be powered by a renewable, safe and clean energy source. Thus, biomass will replace almost entirely natural gas, whose existing installation will only function as a back-up service.
New projects for 2025
In addition to these initiatives, the company has three more renewable thermal energy projects in the administrative processing phase that will have an estimated combined annual production of 130 GWht/year. They are expected to be ready for construction by 2025. The company is also negotiating with ten other potential industrial customers in Spain with a view to supplying them with renewable thermal energy.
