Magnon and Mahou San Miguel start the works for the installation of a biomass plant at the Alovera production center

  • The infrastructure will include the installation of two biomass boilers of 10 MWt each, which will allow the supply of 85 GWht per year of renewable thermal energy for 15 years.
  • With this initiative, to which it has allocated more than 16 million euros, Mahou San Miguel will be able to reduce its plant’s direct CO2 emissions by 95%.

Magnon, a subsidiary of the Ence Group, and Mahou San Miguel, the leading beverage and services company in the beer sector in Spain, have started the construction of the infrastructure for the installation of two biomass boilers of 10 MWt each at Mahou San Miguel’s plant in Alovera (Guadalajara).

In addition, Magnon will also be responsible for the assembly, commissioning and operation of the facility to generate thermal energy from biomass, a renewable, safe and clean energy source that contributes to rural development by generating quality employment.

The new infrastructure, which represents an investment of 16 million euros, will enable the supply of 85 GWht of renewable thermal energy per year for 15 years to decarbonize the operations of the Mahou San Miguel plant in Alovera. The facility is scheduled to be commissioned during the first half of 2026. This project has a grant of four million euros awarded by the Strategic Project for the Recovery and Economic Transformation (PERTE) for the industrial decarbonization of our country.

With this initiative, Mahou San Miguel will be able to reduce by 95% the direct CO2 emissions of its plant, the largest brewery in our country and one of the most technologically advanced in Europe, a benchmark in industry 4.0 and energy efficiency. Thus, biomass will replace natural gas, whose existing installation will only function as a back-up service, practically in its entirety.

Decarbonization: a shared challenge

Magnon is firmly committed to promoting the decarbonization of Spanish industry. Since 2023, the company has a first service contract in operation with a leading company in the agri-food sector. This is in addition to the one signed in 2024 with Mahou San Miguel, a leading company in the Spanish brewing sector.

In addition to these initiatives, the company has three more renewable thermal energy projects in the administrative processing phase, which will represent an estimated combined annual production of 130 GWht/year. They are expected to be ready to start construction in 2025. The company is also negotiating with ten other potential industrial customers in Spain with a view to supplying them with renewable thermal energy.
