Ence’s specialty products will reach 30% of its cellulose sales by 2025

Ence – Energía y Celulosa, European leader in the production of eucalyptus pulp, expects 30% of its pulp sales in 2025 to come from its special products, i.e. the Ence Advanced line, which have a better margin than standard pulp. The company’s goal is to exceed 50% of total pulp sales in 2028. These figures do not include the contribution of fluff pulp.

Ence launched the Ence Advanced brand in 2019, as a result of years of work in the field of R+D+i. Under this name are included different pulp proposals designed to meet the needs of specific paper segments, which provide greater added value and a smaller environmental footprint. Its differential values include its ability to replace long fibre with short fibre and plastic materials in different applications, offering sustainable alternatives to its customers and end consumers.

Within Ence Advaced, Powercell is a unique short-fibre cellulose product whose strength characteristics enable it to replace long-fibre pulp while maintaining the required mechanical properties. It offers a more economical alternative for the customer and is more efficient in the use of natural resources.

Naturcell, Ence’s unbleached cellulose, offers strength, opacity, softness and quality, as well as reduced consumption of resources in its production (energy, wood, chemicals and water) compared to standard cellulose. Naturcell can be used in the manufacture of unbleached tissue (toilet paper, kitchen towels, napkins) and in packaging applications to replace plastics (food packaging, etc.). Along the same lines, Naturcell Zero, with a certified carbon neutrality guarantee, offers customers the added value of reducing the carbon footprint of their products.

Ence also markets other differentiated products, such as the low-porosity cellulose, Closecell, intended for applications in barrier papers or labels, as well as the replacement of plastic materials in flexible packaging and food wrapping; Decocell, which is particularly suitable and in demand for the manufacture of materials as diverse as decor paper or food trays; and Porocell, Opacell and High White, which can be used in applications such as filter papers, paper for the outer layers of cardboard packaging or high quality printing and writing papers, among others.

Fluff: an alternative in Europe for products imported from the USA

In the same line of commitment to diversification in the production of pulp, Ence is currently carrying out the project for the production of fluff pulp in its biofactory in Navia. With this initiative, the company will diversify its production towards the raw material needed to supply sanitary and absorbent products, such as nappies, which are currently imported from North America.

This project, which will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, will allow, among other advantages, to reduce the carbon footprint of the final products, by using natural, renewable, compostable and biodegradable fibres of local origin.
