Ence is committed to efficient management of water resources to fight desertification

The efficient management of water resources and, especially, the reduction of water consumption in its facilities, is one of the environmental priorities for Ence. It is also one of its corporate sustainability objectives. For this reason, and on the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, the company wants to highlight its commitment to offering a sustainable solution to this problem, an increasingly common reality due to human activity and climatic variations.

The company has launched specific plans for optimizing water resources for its independent power plants, already achieving the first results in this area. In Puertollano, one of the benchmarks, it is contemplated to start up a second generation plant with a cooling system using aerocapacitors that allows water consumption to be reduced by 10 times compared to other methods.

Likewise, the case of the Huelva energy complex is also relevant, where it has been possible to reduce surface water consumption by 32% in the last two years. Similarly, the Lucena biomass plant is another example of efficiency in water consumption and circular economy, since it takes advantage of the treated water from the municipal WWTP, thus avoiding additional extraction and reducing consumption by 35%.

Significant progress has been made in the water factories in Pontevedra and Navia, thanks to the measures implemented to improve efficiency in consumption and reuse, fundamentally improving control and engineering in the process. Thanks to this, the Pontevedra biofactory has managed to reduce water consumption by 20% in the last 4 years.

As a sign of its commitment to the responsible management of water resources, Ence is part of EsAgua, a pioneering network of Spanish entities committed to reducing its water footprint, a unique and innovative project in Spain where more than 30 Spanish entities already participate. By joining this initiative, Ence expresses its commitment to contribute to preserving the environment and achieving a more efficient allocation of water resources, making progress towards calculating the water footprint and raising awareness among all its stakeholders.
