Ence considers that the Constitutional Court’s decision guarantees legal certainty and clears up any doubts about the future of the Pontevedra biofactory.

The Constitutional Court has rejected the appeal filed by the State Attorney’s Office against the judgment handed down in February 2023 by the Supreme Court, which upheld the legality of the extension of the concession of Ence’s biofactory in Pontevedra.

Pending the decision of this Court on the other appeal filed against this ruling by the Pontevedra City Council, Ence Energía y Celulosa considers that this ruling of the Constitutional Court clears the doubts about the future of Ence Pontevedra, whose activity is linked to about 5,100 families, and provides full legal certainty to the activity and permanence of this biofactory in Pontevedra.

The company will continue to focus on creating sustainable wealth and employment in Galicia through the activity of this plant, which will always remain at the forefront of efficiency, best available technologies and environmental quality.

COMMITMENT TO PONTEVEDRA AND GALICIA

For the company, care for the environment and transparency are key. A commitment that Ence keeps alive through its activity and that is also evidenced through the Social Plan that the company develops in this region: one of the largest social initiatives carried out by a private company in Spain, whose next call has been announced today and will open on September 2nd.

Ence has announced that it plans to invest €120 million in the Pontevedra biofactory starting in 2025 to continue advancing in its competitiveness and sustainability, which will allow it to diversify its Kraft pulp product mix, without involving an expansion or increase in production in any case. This project, ‘Pontevedra Avanza’, will be in addition to a significant annual recurring investment.

Ence’s commitment to Galicia is also evidenced by the project the company is developing in the town of As Pontes in A Coruña. This is a bioplant for the production of bleached recycled fiber, which also includes a pilot project for the recycling of post-consumer textiles. This project is fully aligned with Ence’s vision, which is committed to minimizing the consumption of natural resources in all its lines of activity.
