Ence Biogas signs a contract with Sener to engineer six biomethane plants

Ence Biogas, a subsidiary of the Ence-Energía y Celulosa Group, has signed a contract with the engineering and technology company Sener for the development of conceptual, basic and detailed engineering for six biomethane plants, located in different parts of Spain. This agreement will be executed this year, which will enable the administrative processing of the plants to begin.

With the start-up of these plants, scheduled for the end of 2025 and 2026, Ence Biogas will inject 300 GWh of biomethane into the gas grid and generate 90,000 tonnes of biofertiliser for agricultural use.

These facilities, through a model based on the sustainable management of organic waste (agricultural, livestock or industrial), will produce biogas which will subsequently be purified and converted into biomethane. They will also produce an ecological fertiliser from the digestate obtained after the anaerobic digestion in which the biogas is produced.

In line with the company’s other businesses, sustainability is the basis of the design of these plants. The process has been designed prioritising the minimisation of natural resources, the use of local raw materials, waste recovery, energy self-sufficiency and the absolute absence of unpleasant odours.

Ence Biogas has a portfolio of 15 biomethane plants under development in the autonomous regions of Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia, Navarre, Castilla y León, Castilla la Mancha, Murcia and the Basque Country. Ence’s goal is to develop 20 biogas plants over the next five years, thereby strengthening its diversification into renewable energies.

Through this new business project, Ence will contribute to energy independence, decarbonisation and the use and valorisation of biomass resources, taking into account their abundance on the Iberian Peninsula. It is also a technology with a high potential for development and capable of constituting a lever in the energy transition process.

For the President of Ence Biogas, Jordi Aguiló, with this contract “we take a step forward in the development of our business strategy and, in particular, in our commitment to biomethane. A technology and a project fully aligned with the circular economy and the just energy transition”.

In words of Sener’s Energy General Manager, Álvaro Lorente, “We are proud to be able to help Ence again, a customer with whom we already have a long-standing relationship, in these new projects, which will contribute to the decarbonisation of the industry and guarantee a more sustainable future for generations to come”.
