Ence and the Spanish Red Cross sign an agreement to transfer 100 tons of CO2 absorbed by the company’s forests in Huelva

• The company, a leader in forest management, has registered more than 2,000 hectares of forests as carbon sinks

December 4, 2024 – Ence Energía y Celulosa, a leading company in Spain in the comprehensive and responsible management of forest surfaces and crops, has formalized an agreement with the Spanish Red Cross to transfer 100 tons of CO2, fixed through one of the forest sinks located in the Huelva town of Zalamea la Real. In this way, the institution will offset part of its greenhouse gas emissions.

Carbon sinks, composed mainly of forest masses, play an important role in the fight against climate change by capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. These projects not only contribute to the mitigation of global warming, but also improve air quality, protect biodiversity and promote the health of local ecosystems.

To date, Ence has registered more than 2,000 hectares as carbon sinks, with another 700 hectares in different stages of the registration process. Ence plans to incorporate at least 500 additional hectares in the first quarter of 2025. Thus, the company will exceed 3,000 hectares of sinks, which will be used, among other things, to offset the carbon footprint of companies and administrations.

The company, with more than 67,000 hectares of forest area in the Iberian Peninsula, maintains a firm commitment to the management of the natural environment and its social and environmental surroundings, which leads it to actively involve itself in initiatives that promote and protect its natural capital. In this way, it promotes economic development in rural areas, creating employment, promoting active management of the environment and helping to establish population in the territory.

Collaborations such as the one established between the company and the Spanish Red Cross are essential to implement initiatives that reinforce sustainability and local well-being, effectively contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals established in the 2030 Agenda.
