Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
Conservation and restoration actions
Objectives:
- Habitat improvement by increasing the number of available ecological niches.
- Improvement of existing bird populations and potential increase in biodiversity in the Ence forest stands.
- Biological pest control by birds. On the one hand, insectivorous birds ingest large numbers of insects in a short period of time, especially during the breeding season, thus favoring pest control. On the other hand, birds of prey, such as kestrels and owls, contribute to the biological control of rodent pests.
Good practices in Ence´s forest stands
In the south, the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park—located in Huelva and comprised of pastures, chestnut groves, holm oaks, cork oaks, and gall oaks—is also part of the Natura 2000 Network and has been declared a Biosphere Reserve. In the north, forest Santarandel, where chestnut, willow, and oak trees predominate, is located in the upper part of the Tambre River valley, in the large Ordes peneplain (A Coruña). Along the river, riparian forests predominate.
